Soviet position at the Pilis mountains
In 2001 we
found the remains of a Soviet position. During the first search
we found some POMZ mines with metal detector. The POMZ-2 is an
anti-personal mine with tripwire fuze. The size of the site we
searched was 50 X 50 m. We found many POMZ cast iron bodies, but
fortunately only four of them were live mines, the most we found
were without explosive charges and fuzes. We found some hand
grenades as well. After finding some Hungarian hand grenades and
a large fragment of an exploded POMZ mine, we thought that we
found the traces of a Hungarian or German attack against the
position.
We decided to excavate the trenches. Originally they were about
120 cm deep. At the bottom of the trenches we found only some
Soviet live rifle and pistol ammunition. Interestingly -
searching the front bank of the trenches - we found a reasonably
high number of spent Soviet cartridge cases. During the
excavations we have not found a single Hungarian or German item
exept the grenades (which could be a captured staff) and a
grenade safety. It betoken us that there was no fight in the
trench. It seems that the Soviet soldiers often shot in front of
the trench. Probably after hearing a noise from anywhere, they
come out of trench and opened fire.
We found the pull safety of a Hungarian Vécsey hand grenade in
the trench. It showed us that the grenade was thrown by the
Soviet soldiers.
We found and excavated the shelter of the commander. It was 2 X 2
m wide. The doorstep was made of board. On the left side we found
the remains of a stove, a lot of ash, a lighter and some buttons.
The most POMZ iron bodies laid alone, but we found three batches
of mine bodies on one stripe. It seems that the minefield was
neutralised after the war. The tripwires and most of the fuzes
and the charges were remowed. The iron bodies were left at the
scene in three batches. But the soldiers haven't finished the
demining, they left some iron bodies and live mines at their
original place.
