Battlefield research expedition in Slovenia. August 9-17, 2003
In July 2003 we discovered a crevice at the hillside of Mrzli Vrh. We supposed that behind the crevice there must be a cavern, because we felt the cold current of air. First we enlarged the crevice. Behind the entrance we found a big cavern. Beneath the scree we found some artifacts: a hammer, a spade, some cartridges and a lantern.
The other goal of our journey was to continue the work we began a year earlier. In 2002 we tried to find the second entrance of a chapel cavern but failed. In this year we tried it again. First we tried to locate the entrance at the hillside with the use of tape-measure and spirit level, but had no success. Than we began digging at the hillside. During the work we regularly analized the colour and the consistance of the soil. Grey soil with shell fragments showed the remains of the trench, which was our guide to the exit. The geologist of our group Almos Toth predicted that when we reach the cliff we are going to find the entrance. After digging out 10 square meters of soil we got to the cliff and we dug there deeper and deeper. Finally we found the left top corner of the entrance. Beacuse it was about 4 meters deep in the hillside, we decided not to finish its recovery.
We gave the opportunity for Slovenian EOD specialists to work beacuse we found a large dud shell. During the excavations the Slovenian TV payed us a visit and recorded a report on us. After the days spent with work we climbed the mount Krn and on Saturday we took part in a commemoration and celebration on the Mrzli Vrh.
